AI can correct grammar, shorten paragraphs, suggest headlines, change tone, summarize drafts, flag repetition, and rewrite confusing passages in seconds. That reaches directly into tasks editors have traditionally performed, particularly at the copyediting end of the profession.

At the same time, generative AI creates an extraordinary amount of new text. Someone still has to decide whether any of it is worth reading.

The editor becomes a stronger filter

• Mechanical editing can be heavily assisted.
• Editors can compare versions and check consistency faster.
• Fact-checking and source verification become more important as plausible fabricated details become easier to produce.
• Voice, structure, audience judgment, originality, and editorial standards are harder to reduce to automated rules.

Editors may spend less time correcting commas and more time asking whether a piece makes a meaningful argument, whether the evidence supports it, and whether it sounds like the publication or author it represents. In a world where producing acceptable prose is inexpensive, deciding what deserves publication may become the more valuable skill.
