AI is giving IT managers another enterprise to run

For computer and information systems managers, AI is unusual because it is both a productivity tool and a new class of technology that the organization expects IT to understand, secure, integrate, and govern. Coding assistants can accelerate development, support tools can draft answers, monitoring systems can surface anomalies, and generative AI can help teams search documentation or summarize incidents. At the same time, every new AI service can introduce questions about data access, identity, cost, vendor dependence, model behavior, and cybersecurity.

The easy demo is not the hard part

The hard work begins when an AI pilot touches production data and real users. IT managers have to decide which models are appropriate, where sensitive information can travel, how outputs are logged, who is accountable when an automated action is wrong, and whether an apparent productivity gain creates a new security or compliance problem. As AI agents gain the ability to take actions across systems, those architecture and governance decisions become even more consequential.

  1. Expect more responsibility for AI platforms, model access, data governance, and vendor evaluation.
  2. Expect technical teams to use AI heavily for coding, testing, troubleshooting, documentation, and support.
  3. Expect the manager’s own value to move toward architecture, risk, prioritization, change management, and explaining technology choices to nontechnical leaders.

Organizations adopting AI need people who understand how it fits with cloud systems, cybersecurity, software delivery, data infrastructure, and business processes. The career advantage is likely to go to IT managers who can move comfortably between those layers rather than treating AI as a stand-alone tool.
