Commercial aviation has used autopilot, flight-management systems, automated navigation, and sophisticated warning systems for decades. AI can extend those capabilities through better weather interpretation, maintenance prediction, route optimization, monitoring, and decision support.

Pilots matter most when the routine stops being routine

Automation handles predictable situations extremely well. Pilots earn much of their value by understanding the entire system and responding when weather deteriorates, equipment behaves unexpectedly, an airport changes, a passenger emergency occurs, or several small problems combine into something the automation was not designed to handle.
